What are the four stages of the menstrual cycle?
MENSTRUATION: Days 1-7: Menstruation is the elimination of the thickened lining of the uterus (endometrium) from the body through the vagina.
FOLLICULAR PHASE: Days 7-14: The follicular phase starts on the first day of menstruation and ends with ovulation.
OVULATION: Days 15-21: Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the surface of the ovary. This usually occurs mid-cycle, around two weeks or so before menstruation starts.
LUTEAL PHASE: Days 22-28: For the next two weeks or so, the follicle transforms into a structure known as the corpus luteum. This structure starts releasing progesterone, along with small amounts of oestrogen.

‘I follow cycle syncing, which is a practice I learned from a great book called Women Code,’ Tammin told FEMAIL.
‘The book talks about doing specific workouts depending where you are in your cycle.’
Tammin said that in the first half of her cycle – which is when you typically might feel as though you have the most energy – she does all of her HIIT workouts.
For the actress, this looks like running and cycling.
‘Then, in the second half – which begins with ovulation and lasts 14 days – I slow down and focus on yoga and hiking,’ Tammin said.
The 37-year-old couples her regular workouts with a healthy diet filled with vegetarian foods.
‘My whole family follows a vegetarian/vegan diet, so I’m always looking for good supplements to make sure we get the right nutrients into our family,’ Tammin said.
‘I am a big advocate for vitamins, minerals, adaptogens and herbs.
‘My favourites are magnesium, L’theanine, Ashwaganda and Reishi.’
Magnesium is said to help replenish muscle stores, while Ashwaganda helps with stress and relaxation and Reishi has been used to help to enhance the immune system.
