Viola Davis was born on her grandmother’s farm in St. Matthews, South Carolina, at the time known as the Singleton Plantation. Her family moved to Central Falls, Rhode Island, when she was two months old, where her father, Dan Davis, worked as a horse groomer and trainer. Her mother, Mary Alice (Logan), was a civil rights activist as well as a maid and factory worker. Davis attended Central Falls High School, where she discovered her passion for acting. She attended the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City and studied theater at Rhode Island College. Davis made her film debut in 1996’s The Substance of Fire, playing a nurse (1996). Following guest appearances on various TV shows and films, she won the role of Nurse Lynnette Peeler in City of Angels in 2000. (2000). Davis won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in the play “King Hedley II” on Broadway in 2001.
