If Vivien Leigh’s life were turned into a film, it would begin in India shortly before World War I, where a wealthy British businessman could live like a prince.
A little princess is born in the mountains above Calcutta. She is six years old when her parents take her to England for the first time, due to the outbreak of World War I.
Despite the fact that Vivien is two years younger than any of the other girls at the academy, her mother believes she should have a proper English upbringing and insists on enrolling her in a convent school.
The lonely child’s only source of consolation is a cat she found in the school’s courtyard and was allowed to take up to her dormitory by the nuns. Maureen O’Sullivan, an eight-year-old girl who has been transplanted from Ireland, is her first and closest friend at school.
In the drabness of a convent school, the two girls will conjure up images of places they’ve visited and places they’d like to visit in the future. After 18 months at the academy, Vivien’s mother returns from India and takes her to see a play in London. Vivien will insist on watching the same play 16 times in the next six months.
